#TipTuesday - My Horse Needs More Energy
We often get asked about how to help horses perform at their best, so here are 5 things to look at if you're finding your horse could use some more energy:

1️⃣ Dietary energy (calories) available must be high enough to support workload
2️⃣ Energy sources need to suit the different types of work
3️⃣ Check for vitamin and mineral deficiencies
4️⃣ Keep working on fitness
5️⃣ Look at adding additional, appropriate energy sources

1️⃣ Energy (calories) available must be enough to support workload:
Energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements of horses in heavy work can increase by 1.5 – 2 times! Start by looking at their current diet and workload and ensure that their calorie levels match. If they are already getting plenty of fibre, it may be as simple as adjusting the rate of their concentrate.

2️⃣ Are their energy sources suitable?
Depending on work type, horses require different sources of energy. A horse at rest can derive 70% of their energy from quality fibre, but horses with high levels of fast, intense work need carbohydrates from grains to fuel anaerobic respiration.

3️⃣ Check for vitamin, mineral and electrolyte imbalances:
Some vitamin and mineral deficiencies can result in dull behaviour, and even dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can cause lethargy. Make sure their diet is balanced with enough electrolyte support.

4️⃣ Are they fit enough?
The more we exercise, the fitter we get! Improving your horse's fitness means they can exercise harder for longer. Work on fitness first and adjust diet to support it.

5️⃣ Add additional, appropriate energy sources:
➡️ Fibre-dense supplements like lupin hulls can provide valuable, cool energy
➡️ Fats are a safe and effective source of energy for horses in heavy work. They are calorie dense, with 2.25 x the energy:weight ratio of carbohydrates.
➡️Horses with heavy workloads can benefit from quality carbohydrate sources like grains to fuel performance and replenish their glycogen stores.

NOTE: If ever your horse is lacking energy uncharacteristically, check for underlying health issues first.
REMEMBER: Always make changes or introductions to their diet slowly.
