At T&R, we’re here to make horse nutrition simple, supportive, and stress-free so that you can spend more time enjoying your horses. We put you and your horses are at the heart of everything we do, so we are proud to offer nutritional support services that are easy to access and tailored to your goals.
From our quick and easy FeedSmart Diet Calculator to our custom diet consults, we can offer you practical advice and high-quality feeds to keep your horses health, happy and thriving.
Get a personalised, balanced diet recommendation for your horse in under 5 minutes.
Powered by the science and technology that you know and trust from FeedXL, our FeedSmart Diet Calculator can assess and recommend a balanced diet that meets your horse’s daily requirements without the deficiencies, double ups, unnecessary supplements that can lead to inefficient (and costly) feeding.
We’re excited to introduce you to our new diet tool T&R FeedSmart, powered by the technology that brings you FeedXL. By filling in the easy-to-use form with information about your horse, their workload and environment, FeedSmart can provide you with a personalised diet straight away, that is carefully balanced and backed by science to optimise your horse’s health, function and performance.
STEP 1:
Enter your horse’s information, i.e. age, weight, height, breed etc. Try to give as much information as possible.
STEP 2:
Enter information about their pasture and any hay, fibres or chaffs you are feeding.
STEP 3:
Let FeedSmart assess and calculate a diet recommendation for your horse. You’ll get a recommendation straight away, and can choose to have this emailed to you.
If possible, weighing your feed is always the best way to ensure you know what you’re eating, and can help us to calculate their diet more accurately. Using a kitchen scale is a good way to weigh chaff or fibre sources.
To help, a standard 2 litre scoop of chaff weighs around 250g.
Hay is slightly trickier! You can always weigh hay nets, by standing on a bathroom scale. Get your weight first, then measure your weight again when holding a full haynet. Whatever the difference is, is the weight of the haynet.
Free choice hay? Click on the button on the calculator to see how to calculate this:
Our FeedSmart diet calculator is built around horses receiving their minimum daily intake requirement of 1.5-2% of their bodyweight in forage daily.
If you received an error message like the one below, it is likely because there isn’t enough forage or fibre in the diet. This might be happening if they are not on ad lib pasture, pasture availability is low, or you’ve entered a low amount of hay.
Try going back to the forage section and increasing the forage intake, for example adding more grass hay.
The average 500kg horse should be getting a minimum of 7.5kg of forage per day!
FeedSmart may have included Lupin Fibre Cubes to increase the fibre content and diversity in your horse’s diet, and Lupin Fibre Boost as a balancer to top up their diet when not using other complete feeds to the recommended rate.
It may also be including Lupin Fibre Cubes if you selected that you are already using it.
You can choose to feed both together, or if Lupin Fibre Boost has been recommended, and your horse is receiving enough pasture and hay, opt for just the Lupin Fibre Boost, as this is contributing to the vitamin and mineral balance in your horse’s diet.
Depending on your horse and their needs, the FeedSmart Diet Calculator may have given you 2 or more diet options. For example, you may have been given a muesli option, a cubes/pellet option and a grain-free option.
Each of these diet options is balanced to meet their daily nutrient requirements, so it is up to you to choose the style of diet that best suits your situation and your horse.
Don’t stress! We understand every horse, every owner and every situation is different. We also offer a complimentary custom diet service, where you can book an individual consult with one of our nutrition team members.
If you’ve got multiple horses or an equine business (i.e. stud, agistment centre, riding school, training stables), you can also contact us to see if you are eligible for site visit and consult from one of our nutrition team, who can look at all of your horses, your property and come up with a tailored feeding plan to suit you.
We know that every horse, every owner and every situation is different. That’s why we offer a complimentary diet consults with our nutrition team.
This service is ideal if you can’t find the help you need with our FeedSmart Diet Calculator, your horse has unique health or performance challenges or your feeding strategies need a more customised approach.
